January Blurred Thoughts

Filed under: Family and Friends — Maria @ 8:46 pm

My Grandson Dave reminded me that if I expected responses on my blog, I really needed to write something new. So here goes. January is nearly gone and it is blur. Bob and I have been clearing out the Lancaster house in preparation to sell it. We pulled the RV into the yard and made it our home away from home. We have packed boxes and labeled things and are now resting for a few days back in Ridgecrest before heading back to clean the garage.

I did leave Bob and the RV for a couple of days last week and headed to San Francisco with Kristi. She had a conference on Domestic Violence to attend. I love when I have time with her and selfishly wish it were more often. She participated in the two day conference and I wandered around S.F. particularly in the Japan District which was only a few blocks from our hotel. I enjoyed the solitude of those walks and I spent lots of time looking at the beautiful Victorian homes along California Street. I also took in “The Aviator”….a truly excellent film and one I really want to share with Bob.

The two photos with this post are from a Monday night dinner in Union Square at the Cheesecake Factory. Click on them to view a larger photo. John, Kym, and John Vincent took BART into the city and met us there. Unfortunately for us, Rhea was teaching a class and couldn’t join us. It was an unexpected treat to see my Bay Area kids so soon, again.

More than anything though, I enjoyed the ride up and back in Kristi’s truck I loved the quietness and the togetherness. I never once said, “ You are driving too fast” for which I am thankful and for which I hope she is grateful. It gave us time to reflect on life, to share ideas, and to talk about future plans. Someday, Kristi would like to have acreage and a rescue kennel for unfortunate dogs. She would be great at this and it does fit into her personality. I laughingly told her I would have to pretend not to be home most of the times she came knocking on the door or I would find myself with a houseful of the rescued. Well, there we would be…the rescued and the bewildered. It certainly doesn’t sound promising.

Log on Blog (Dr. Seuss, I aint)

Filed under: On the Road — Maria @ 12:57 pm

I am not sure anyone will find this log of Bob’s to be top reading material, but to me it speaks of love and concern. Not having spent a great deal of time driving by myself or making long trips, this trip to the Bay Area was an adventure and a test of my navigational and driving skills. Now as I look back, I realize how wonderful cell phones and husbands who really care are. First the log for the trip up and then the one for the very hairy trip back. The log is in regular type and my comments are in blue. Enjoy!

First Day of Maria’s Trip to the Bay Area
Sunday - December 26th 2004

Maria in her car

1010 Sunday A.M. 26 December 2004 Maria departed for Bay area visit with her family members. She will stop after approx. 185 miles at Harris Ranch on 1-5 for the night.
First report back by cell phone at 1015, she just turned onto 395 and asked if I missed her yet? What? Was I insecure or out of my mind.

1050 Passing Jawbone canyon - that means she’s just over 35 miles from home.
1105 I caller her to let her know I was going to shop. She’s just now on 58 and plans to stop in Tehacapi for coffee and walk around.
1200 Maria reported still in Tehachapi - finished a bowl of broccoli soup and has a little over half a tank of gas - told her that should be okay until Harris Ranch, but to keep a watch on it down to 1/4 tank. Said she was doing fine. Still a little hesitant, but talking myself into being an adventurous woman….freedom of the road and all that.
1230 Reported successfully on highway 99 and there was a lot of traffic.
1300 Reported now on 46 with about 25 miles to Hwy 5 and sure sounded in good spirits. Sure, I was flying high, after successfully finding the right roads.
1330 Reported now on I-5 and asked how far to Harris Ranch. Told her would check.

Bob at his computer with a map

1335 Called and said it looked like about 50 miles. She said she would call me when she got there.
1414 Maria arrives at Harris Ranch at distance of 211 miles and gas at about 3/8ths full. Said she’s tired.
1430 Maria called to advise she was inside just waiting for her room to be readied. So will call and advise room number later. Said cell phone back with discrete msg but so far phone worked.
1500 Maria in room 244 -Big room, 2 queen, leather chair and 2 wooden ones and she wants to take pictures, but the camera says no flash card. We believe its in the blue reader still which we think is in her luggage. Meanwhile will take picture with other camera, hopefully it has a Memory Stick. It did and I did.
1615 Reported she had delicious beef low carb hamburger and saving half for later in the room prior to retiring. Harris Ranch is a meat eater’s heaven. If you are traveling in the area, I highly recommend stopping there for a meal. Said restaurant was busy, but hotel in a separate building (big) didn’t seem too busy.
1700 Called to say she was relaxing in her new pajamas Thanks to Kristi and Linda for a great Christmas present. And watching a little TV. Planning to study tomorrow’s portion of the trip hand having rest of her hamburger about 7:00 P.M. and turning in for the night at about 8:00 P.M. I have to admit it was early to turn in but there was nothing much else to do.

Second Day of Maria’s Trip
Monday - December 27 2004

00640 I called Maria after getting up and finding I’d missed her calls. Didn’t reach her right away, Remember the phone was on discrete and had a mind of its own. It only blinked, but made no sounds. I couldn’t get it off discrete. Very frustrating. Both of woke up at 0330 and had trouble getting back to sleep. She plans on having breakfast in the room and leave between 0800 and 0830. Outlook is for rain and heavy in places.
O800 Received Maria’s update - she’s on the road - raining, but not too heavy and so far not any heavy traffic. Reported she’s on her way to route 152. Hurray ! I was feeling extremely competent but I am not sure why.
0909 Position update. Just turned onto 152 and no rain to speak of. Plans to stop for coffee break - I suggested a place coming up called, I believe, Cacguma and it’s on the right hand side.
0920 I called her back - phone not good as she’s in a mountain area, but told her the place was in the mountain area and probably 20 miles from I-5.
0945 Reported on 101 - missed the coffee stop. Advised her it was about 30 miles to 85. She said that was one way wasn’t it - I said yes, west. There I go again, failing the east /west test.
1015 Maria called to say she’d stopped for a break and felt good and about 10 ½ miles from 85.
1030 Reported on 85 N. Told her about 20 miles to pass Fwy 280 -then about 7 to get on 101 N.
10:48 Passed 280
1110 Vicinity of Woodside - heavy rain makes signs hard to read until right on them. Thank God that there wasn’t a lot of traffic as I squinted at signs and hoped I read them right.
1130 Called saying in motel parking lot - congratulating herself. Said was lucky re: Woodside and finding El Camino Real. The truth is I found Woodside by sheer luck and blindly stumbled on El Camino Real which was the street the Motel was on.
1145 Inside waiting room - people were extra nice offering her food, etc. I probably looked like some rain-soaked immigrant just off the boat and looking for shelter. The point however, was that I had successfully driven to the Bay Area.

Day 1 of Maria’s Return Trip
Sunday 2 January 2005

0850 Maria called - she’s underway and on 101 - told her 9 miles to 85. She said it was confusing because her written directions (AAA) didn’t mention 85. This of course is the way she arrived in Menlo Park last Monday. When in doubt follow the directions.
0905 I called her since by now she was overdue to be on 85. She said she’d have to go back to try and find 85 - I told her no not to turn around but stay on 101 the way she was going - she pulled over so we could talk safely. She said there was road construction that must have caused her to miss the 85 signs. We are still discussing this. I don’t think there was an exit or there wasn’t an exit because of construction. Very much a mystery as to why AAA sent me different directions for heading home. Told her she was just fine to stay on 101 as she was going - it would be about 50 miles from where she first got on 101 to 152. She said something about exit 356 to 10th St then to 152. I can’t find anything like a 356, but just an off ramp to 10th St. and then left under the 101 and she would be on 152 east.
0920 I called her for a position report - she’s at 680 (this staying on 101 vs using 85 took her thru San Jose which would usually be very busy, but this was Sunday and she said it wasn’t bad. Of course it was pouring down rain which didn’t help my confusion.
0940 Received call asking did she want 152 west? I now know that when traveling to the Bay Area one takes north and west roads and when returning one takes south and east roads. Simple for everyone that isn’t directional challenged. Told her no and next exit after it would be hers - going to 10th St. E. and then left under 101 and then she’d be on 152 east.
0955 Maria called she’s on 152 east and reported it went over 101 - oh well, I can’t be right all the time - just never wrong.
1010 Received call from Dawn trying to reach Maria, but just had my number so I gave her Maria’s cell phone number.
1011 Called Maria to let her know about Dawn and also found out she was stopping for coffee but it’s at Casa de Fruita instead of the place that she missed on the way up. Well, I missed the place on the way back too ! The coffee at Casa de Fruita was terrific. The rain was following me with vengeance .
11:00 Maria called that she was past San Luis reservoir so she’s nearly to 5. Said she’d talked to Dawn. Dawn was having her own problems with late flights, bad weather, bored child. I am sure she did not want to hear my whining.
1110 Maria called - phones were acting strange at first - she’s now on 5. Weather dry, but lots of traffic. I don’t recall any dry weather. It just wasn’t pouring at that moment. All is relative, I guess.
1140 Received position report. She’s about ½ hour from Harris Ranch. Traffic is unbelievably heavy. Said though she was having fun. Now that was a brave statement on my part. Made to give me a sense of courage…like what you do in a dangerous situation and you don’t want the kids to panic….yes, it was pouring down again.
12:15 Arrived in hotel parking lot. The restaurant parking lot is completely full. She was going in to let the hotel know she was there and then would walk to the restaurant about a block. Actually I drove around the d….restaurant for a long time in a deluge, attempting to avoid both parked and other cars looking for parking spots. Finally logic took hold and I went to the hotel’s nearly empty lot and parked.

1400 Reported she’s now comfortably in her room, but rather tired as it was catching up to her. Said she had a great Caesars salad w/chicken. And a wonderful young waiter who kept bringing me coffee and a trusty novel to read so I wouldn’t feel so alone. My how awful it sounded when the Maitre De shouted, “MARIA, TABLE FOR ONE !” Later on when we connected I sang her this song. “Once you find her - never let her go - except to travel - on her own - from time to time - but make sure she knows - that home is always - hers and my primary destination - many, many thanks - for the wonderful rewards this brings !” Then for an encore, I was just going to sing it again. However, there was no request. (Note: next morning she was appreciative of it but wouldn’t you know she called it a poem.) Yes, everyone needs a lyricist in their life and if I wasn’t appreciative at the moment, it was because I stepped into a large, cold puddle on my way to the room. No one had turned on the heat and I was freezing, and frankly Bob’s musical talent leaves something to be desired (Sorry honey but it is true.) As soon as I had some sleep and was toasty warm, I was much more appreciative of his efforts.

Day 2 of Maria’s Return Trip
Monday 3 - January 2005

0605 I called Maria and learned she was already on the road in the dark. Said it was still 26 miles to 46. She had started out about 0545. It’s raining and she was only going 50MPH.
0655 I called Maria because I missed a call from her while I was turning TV’s on throughout the house. The weather reports were not good. She stopped at 5 and 46 waiting for it to get light - she’d been in some heavy rain earlier. Expected to wait where she was for about a half hour.
I do not know what I was thinking. I am a terrible night driver, but in a moment of insanity, I decided to leave early and watch the sunrise. Watch the sunrise ! It never did. It just went from black to dark grey and finally to medium grey. I sat at a Carl’s Jr. and discussed road conditions with a great young employee. He must have listened to every trucker that came through because he surely was knowledgeable about what I was about to encounter.
0725 Maria reported back on the road and now on 46 proceeding toward Wasco and that it was raining pretty good. No sun in the east just a somewhat lighter sky and traffic not too bad. Will call when on 99. Plans are for her to stop at truck stop on 58 on east side of Bakersfield.
0800 Maria now on 99 with traffic not too bad but heavy raining so she’s driving slow in right lane. Yeah, little old lady slow, but it felt safe. I was getting lots of encouragement from Bob.
0815 phone conversation update - now on 58 in practically standstill traffic - she feels good and safe with the slow traffic. 5 at the Grapevine is closed for snow and 58 is now the alternate route for trucks heading toward L.A.
0850 Maria reported she’s at the truck stop having coffee. Waitress told her they haven’t heard from truckers or Highway Patrol about a closure or snow over the Tehachapi mountains. Plans to be there only 10-15 minutes over coffee and reading. So I felt better knowing I wouldn’t be spending the night in Bakersfield.
0925 Maria called and said she was at Keene - still not snowing, but raining and that she had been through real dense fog earlier, but was lucky and was able to get right behind a 5th wheel trailer with real bright rear lights to follow. I was so proud of pulling in behind that 5th wheel that I forgot to be afraid.
0940 Said she was passing the RV manufacturing plant in Tehachapi and was doing fine - then said, “You know what? After this experience I know I will be able to do anything.” Before this
she’d be the first to clench up and fear unfavorable weather travel. She didn’t say but it must not be snowing and that’s great because now ahead of her it’s mostly downhill. She sounded very confident and for me not to worry. Traffic on this segment was so heavy because of the closure of 5 at the Grapevine.
0953, 0954, and 1000 I called her but no answer. My cell phone battery was not charging. I changed the position in the cradle and it was fine again. I sure didn’t mean to worry Bob He had done enough of that already.
1001 Now on 14 said her phone hadn’t rung in light rain, traffic good and that she was so proud of herself (ME TOO)
1035 On 14 about 8 miles yet to Ridgecrest turnoff - now raining heavily. She said, “I can’t believe God is doing this to me.” I merely replied that it was a true test ! True, I think God went a little overboard in his testing of my driving skills. However, I must remember to give thanks. He did get me there and back safely and I now believe I can handle just about any freeway, highway, or byway.

Chistmas Part 3

Filed under: Holidays — Maria @ 8:04 pm

Upon my arrival at the motel in Redwood City, I was pleasantly surprised. The suite that Dawn, Jade and I would share was wonderfully large. There was a livingroom, a bedroom with two queen-sized beds, a large bathroom, and a kitchen with stove, refrigerator, microwave and a table with four chairs. I hardly had time to bring up the tree, gifts, and luggage from my car before Rhea arrived. John was meeting Dawn and Jade’s flight so Rhea and I had an entire afternoon together. In spite of the rain, we had a wonderful time. Rhea took me to her gym and we both worked out a little. After our workout, we had something to eat and drink and just spent the time quietly talking before heading over to the house where we would meet up with John, Jade, and Dawn. It wasn’t long until Cara announced that John’s car had pulled into the driveway. We rushed outside to greet everyone and get hugs all the way around. Rhea fixed a delicious soup and we all relaxed and caught up on each other’s lives. Soon it was time to head back to the motel and a good night’s sleep.

The next day was also very rainy. In the morning, Dawn, Jade, and I went shopping and had our breakfast at the local Target store. We had walked the two or three blocks to the store, stopping only to take photos of a slightly seedy place called The Hanky Panky Gentlemen Club. (A perfect name for a club in a bad mystery novel.) Our shopping included some rather large items which made our walk home quite a power-weight workout.. Rhea joined us at lunch time. We ate outdoors at the Menlo Café. It is a favorite place for Rhea and Cara which has wonderful salads, teas, and coffees. Next we headed over to the Palo Alto Junior Museum where Jade had a wonderful time discovering the mysteries of machines. The museum has outstanding ” hands on displays”using pulleys, gears, etc. In spite of the intermittent downpours, we enjoyed exploring the outside zoo with all the interesting animals and reptiles. Before we knew it, the afternoon was over and it was time to head back to our hotel for a little rest. I had brought with me the Memory Book that I made of Al’s Travels to Nashville. For those who don’t know, Al is a little Teddy Bear that Bob and I often take on our trips. We pose him at different tourist points and then send the photos to Jade. She also has a little bear like him who is named Sal. She sends photos back of her bear. What a wonderful experience to share my book and photos with Jade.

Again, we woke to more dreary skies. Dawn and I fixed coffee and Jade was our little helper cutting the doughnuts procured from the front office into fourths and arranging them artfully on a paper plate. We turned the TV in the bedroom on to cartoons for Jade and the one in the living room to the terrible news of the disastrous Tsunami that devastated so many Asian countries. As most of you know, Dawn’s father owned a hotel right on the Patong Beach of Phuket Bay in Thailand. She spent six years there some time ago and then went back last year about this time with her family. Her father now lives in Bangkok and sold the hotel last year. Watching her watching the horrors caused by the tidal wave, frequently brought tears to my eyes.

Late in the afternoon, John and Rhea came over and finally it was time to open all those beautifully wrapped and wondrous looking gifts. Once again I was reminded that Christmas is most special when seen through the eyes of a child. It became a magical time . A time of fairies, paper, ribbon, and lots of oohs and aahs. Watching Jade as she opened her gifts was the most fun of all. What a beautiful grandchild I have. The glow in her eyes was worth the whole trip.

Although Dawn’s birthday was not until the next day, we celebrated it on the evening of the 28thth, We went to Joy Meadows, an awesome Chinese Restaurant which serves both the physical and spiritual needs of its customers. It has an angel bookstore attached and club rooms upstairs for group meetings. I brought some hats and table decorations with me from the Dollar Store in R/C. They helped to make it a very silly and childlike time. John and Kym joined us even though we were heading to Danville to see them the next day. They wanted to visit a little with Rhea and John who were not joining us on the Danville tour. The conversations flowed from computers, to angels, to workplace challenges and back again.

The morning of the 29th Jade, Dawn and I headed down the road and across the bridge to Danville to visit John and Kym in their beautiful new home. They have already done an amazing amount of new landscaping. The large yard is fantastic with a new hot tub, barbecue area, and a large deck. They have now turned their energies to remodeling inside. It is going to be showroom perfect when finished. I felt so proud of both of them and their accomplishments. After another gift exchange and delicious cinnamon coffee, we packed ourselves into John’s car and toured Danville before a second celebration of Dawn’s Birthday with lunch at TGIF’s and a tour of Mount Diablo. Sunset found us headed back to our motel, tired but happy, after another wonderful day.

The following day, Dawn met with her agent, Devorah Harris to talk about her book. Jade and I tagged along. Devorah is a Minnesotan and I felt immediately at home with her as we talked about places we had in common. We had breakfast at a classic old café which was both quaint and noisy. After breakfast we headed toward Keplers, a Palo Alto bookstore. While Dawn and Devorah book chatted, Jade and I went in search of children books. I found one I liked about Fairy Tea Parties and she found one about Spider man. I bought both. We read Spider man and punched out fairies, invitations, and party favors for an imaginary tea party. The time went by quickly and soon it was back to the motel to rest for awhile. Later in the day, Rhea and John joined us and we had dinner in a Thai restaurant. It was quiet and subdued as would be expected so soon after the Tsunami .

New Years Eve Day, we awoke to the promise of better weather. Perfect timing for a day at John and Rhea’s beautiful acreage high in the mountains overlooking the Pacific. I rode with John in the jeep and though I hate the jeep and am so glad it is no longer mine, I was grateful for the special time with John. Jade, Dawn, and Rhea drove up in my car. We left both vehicles roadside and trekked up the still muddy path to the Yurt. For those of you who are not familiar with Yurts, they are huge canvas buildings. Theirs is round and has wonderful windows and a skylight. Rhea and John have been working on the land which was in much need of care when they bought it. John is slowly and carefully solving erosion problems by building dams, digging diversion ditches, and planting trees. He also put in a water system and installed a wood-burning stove in the yurt. All of course with help and encouragement from Rhea.

We explored the land, snapped family photos, and took advantage of the sunlight to have an outdoor picnic. Soon it was time to head back to the cars in search of New Years Eve festivities. John and Rhea had discovered an outstanding RV, hotel, cabin complex nearby called Costanoa. They wanted to share it with me in the hope that I would encourage Bob to bring our RV up there this summer. We arrived at the lodge restaurant just as the rain was beginning and also just as the management was setting up for their New Years Eve Party. We decided to eat dinner there and Jade, along with the many other children, had a wonderful time helping to decorate. There was a lot of glittery sequins to put on tables and helium balloons to inflate. The atmosphere was positive and John had an interesting and serious talk with two women at a table near ours about the pros and cons of yurts vs. tents.

Soon though it was time to head out for a second party in the same area. This one was at the Venture Lodge. It is an old well-kept lodge which I believe, is now a part of the community of Pescardaro. When we arrived there was a bustling of activity in the kitchen as many people were putting last minute touches on their special dishes. Later there was a delicious buffet, dancing, and for me the fun of seeing John’s friend, Buddy of whom I think highly. John stayed on at the party, but the rest of us were fading fast and we headed down the hill in a now heavy rain. It was good we had Rhea with us as a guide or we would still be wandering around looking for the correct way out of the hills.

New Years Day we had plans to meet Dawn’s Aunt Georgia and Uncle Rob who live in Oakland. Rob and Georgia met us around noon and the five of us drove over to Rhea and John’s. From there we headed to Stanford University and the Rodin outdoor exhibit. We shot a few photos and walked over in the cold, damp, rainy weather to see the Chapel. Even the rain could not put a damper on the majestic beauty of it. It was disappointing to find the doors locked. We had hoped to share its warmth and indoor beauty. Instead we hurried back to the cars and headed for a restaurant meal and something warm to drink. We took our time and it was fun watching Rob interact with Jade. The creativity level for both was very high. Georgia and Dawn had time to reminisce about family and particularly about the home that Dawn lived in with her Grandmother and Aunt, This will be helpful as she does rewrites on the early chapters of her book. We left the restaurant late afternoon. John and Rhea headed home and the rest of us headed back to the motel for a little longer visit.

Departure day came and it seemed too soon to be leaving. Saying goodby is not my strong suit. In some ways, I would loved to have stayed another week. I knew I would miss everyone. However, I was also anxious to return home to Bob and my pets. John picked Dawn and Jade up about 8:30 in the morning so that they would have plenty of time to catch a late morning flight. I left shortly after for the long drive home. All in all, it was a most pleasant time.
