Call it spring fever, second childhood syndrome, or simply delightfully irresponsible and immature. What it is called doesn’t matter because the enjoyment was worth every moment of guilty pleasure. For the most part, Bob and I are careful eaters. Most mornings, we have either oatmeal and a banana, or granola, yogurt and fruit. Bacon and eggs or omelets are gifts we give to ourselves on those infrequent mornings when we go out for our early morning meal. All of our strict rituals flew out the window today.

Blame it on Bob and his purchase of a soft ice-cream maker. Last week he found a Cuisinart Soft Ice-Cream Maker on-line. For Bob, it was like finding the Mother Lode or winning the lottery. Soft-ice cream is Christmas, Halloween, and Easter all rolled into one in his mind. In the blink of an eye and a click of a mouse, he ordered the machine and then counted the days until its arrival. On Friday afternoon, he was at the door when the UPS truck rolled up our street. He was halfway down the walk when it stopped in front of the house.

Bob brought his long-awaited treasure into the kitchen, opened the box, looked at all the parts, and announced, “I will read the directions tonight and we will have ice-cream tomorrow afternoon.” On Saturday morning, he realized the ice-cream bowl was to go in the freezer not the refrigerator where he had mistakenly put it Friday night. The switch from refrigerator to the freezer was quickly made. The directions said it must be there for twelve hours, but both of us thought that maybe six hours after being in the refrigerator over night would be ample.

So early that afternoon, I mixed up the cream and other ingredients for vanilla ice-cream and we poured them into the machine for the twenty minutes the booklet said it would take to complete the procedure. It was not to be. Obviously, the bowl needed the full twelve hours in the freezer. Our ice-cream never solidified, but remained a fluid liquid. Like two disappointed children, we knew we would have to wait. The mixed ingredients went into another bowl and into the refrigerator and the freezer bowl went into the freezer.

I went off to a movie with a friend, Bob went back to his computer and soon our minds were off the long wait for Sunday and a totally frozen bowl. We woke up bright and early, looked at each other and in near unison shouted, “Ice-cream for breakfast!” And so it happened. The ice-cream maker was fetched from the storage area, yesterday’s mixture retrieved from the refrigerator, and the now really, really cold freezer bowl brought out of the freezer. There was just time enough to grab the camera and record the fun. After twenty minutes of listening, watching, and hoping, our soft ice-cream was ready.

I checked the clock, it was almost eight o’clock. Bob pulled the handle on the machine and the first of the ice-cream rolled out and into his bowl. He quickly filled mine and together we tasted the sweet cold vanilla treat. Neither of us could ever remember a time in our life that we had ice-cream for breakfast, and although not on either of our bucket lists, it was a pretty awesome first and I think maybe we need to add “Spontaneous Adventures with Desserts” to our list of fun activities while we are still young at heart and able to enjoy life.

Here it is a week later and once again, I have reneged on a promise I made to myself to post as soon as Bob and I returned from the RV trip with our five-year old granddaughter, Danica. Well, the truth is, I started working on Memory Book pages and although I anticipated 7 or 8 pages, I went on to complete 28 pages. . . all from this magical week-end. The little tinges of guilt . . . the house is a mess, the dirty clothes are piling up, there are still dishes in the sink, emails and phone calls to be returned nag at me, but I am also so proud of my pages, Heck, it was worth it. I was involved in doing something I love to do and that is what makes life worth living.

I posted the pages in an album on Facebook and you can reach them by easily. Just click here on The Joy of RVing with Our Five Year Old Granddaughter. Since the slide show moves ahead at the normal speed, you may want to hit the pause button to read the journal part of some of the pages. Please forgive me if I have given too many directions. I can’t help it. It is a carry-over from all those years of teaching.

I do hope you will take time to view my work. Danica has taken quite an interest in looking at past Memory Books especially the one about our cruise last November. This not only pleases me beyond words, but looking at the photos and reading the captions to her are treasured moments.

The RV is packed The dogs are wild with anticipation and Bob and I are looking forward to a week-end camping trip with our five year old grand daughter, Danica.

Kristi will bring Danica as far as Mojave which is about halfway between our two homes. We will all have lunch together at McDonalds and then three of us will head for Boulder Creek and its campgrounds, while Kristi heads out for a week-end with Theresa and the Barstow to Vegas motorcycle races.

Meanwhile Danica’s brother Eric will spend the week-end with his other grandmother. It will be our turn with him sometime next month.

This is going to be a short post, but I want to include a couple of memory book pages from Easter at Nana and Papa’s. The entire album is on my facebook page, but these are my favorites.
